
Chengde Mountain Resort
It is situated in the
basin to the north of Chengde City. The emperors of the Qing Dynasty used it
as a summer retreat as well as a place for handling the government affairs.
It is the largest imperial garden existing in the world today. The construction
began in 1703 and finished in 1792. The total area, surrounded by a 10-kilometer-long
palace wall, covers 5,640,000 square meters, which are divided into two parts:
a palace quarter and scenery quarter. It consists of over 120 groups of architecture.
Some of them bear some emperors' inscrip
tions.
The resort was listed in 1961 as a historical spot to be protected and designated
in 1982 as an important area of scenery and historical places by the government.
In December,1994 The Chengde Mountain Resot and Temples Around it was listed in the Chronology of Recognition of World Heritages in China.
